  1. Second Bit

From the recording Wise Guy

“Second Bit” refers to a second trip to prison. If someone goes in for a second bit and doesn’t talk, you know they’re on the level. “Second Bit” has a punchy piano melody accentuated by horns who eventually trade spots with a pentatonic horn line over a chromatic walk-up / walk-down in the bass. If you’re listening carefully you’ll hear how we “wrap” the end of the first head with the beginning of the second head. Tony’s blues chops dominate the first half of this track until Matt puts some air through his horn and hits us with a high Bb. Marty swoops in and picks up where Matt left off, winding his way through the 16 bar blues. The intro is revisited as the end of the solos, where we take the head out once through.
